10 years (general rule)

Legal and continuous residence for most non-EU nationals not covered by the special cases.

2 years (Ibero-Americans and others)

Nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, or Sephardic Jews.

1 year (special cases)

Those born in Spain, married to a Spanish citizen, or widowed spouses not legally separated at the time of the spouse's death.

Exams and documentation

CCSE and DELE A2.

The constitutional knowledge exam (CCSE) and the Spanish language exam (DELE A2) are compulsory, with some exceptions. We guide you on where to take them and what to study.

Once you have passed, we prepare all the documentation and file the application with the Ministry of Justice.

How many years of residence do I need for Spanish citizenship?
The general rule requires 10 years of legal, continuous residence immediately prior to the application, although this period is drastically reduced depending on the applicant's origin or personal circumstances.
In which cases is the period for obtaining citizenship reduced?
The period is reduced to 2 years for nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal or Sephardic Jews; and to just 1 year for those born in Spanish territory, people married to Spanish citizens, or widowed spouses who were not legally separated.
Which exams must be passed (CCSE, DELE) and who is exempt?
You must pass the CCSE exam (constitutional and cultural knowledge) and the DELE A2 exam (Spanish language), with automatic exemptions for those who completed and obtained Spanish secondary education qualifications (ESO or Bachillerato) in Spain.
Can I keep my original nationality when obtaining Spanish citizenship?
Yes, nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Portugal are exempt from renouncing their original nationality when swearing allegiance to the Spanish Crown.
How long does the citizenship application take to be decided?
The Ministry of Justice has a maximum legal period of one year to decide. If there is no response, the silence counts as a refusal, but a contentious-administrative appeal can be filed before the Audiencia Nacional to speed it up.
