The most common questions
about residence permits

What types of residence permit can I apply for?
There are permits for non-lucrative residence, family reunification, employed or self-employed work, study stays, family members of Spanish citizens, and exceptional circumstances such as "arraigo" (settlement-based residence).
How and when is a residence permit renewed?
The renewal application must be filed electronically during the 2 months before the expiry date or within the 3 months after it. Filing on time automatically extends the validity of the previous permit until a decision is issued.
Can I go from temporary to permanent residence?
Yes, after 5 years of continuous legal residence in Spain you can apply for the long-term or EU long-term residence authorisation. Periods spent in Spain on a study stay now count towards 50% of their total duration.
Can I bring my family over with a residence permit?
Yes, after one year of legal residence and having applied for renewal for another year. You can reunite with your spouse, minor or disabled children, and ascendants over 65 years of age.
What happens if my permit expires before I renew it?
There is a 3-month grace period to process a late renewal. Starting the procedure within this period preserves the foreign national's provisional legal status until the final decision.
